Here is why you should still pay those bills on time:
Reported Delinquencies
Although timely rental and utility payments are not typically reported to the credit bureaus, missed payments can be. Your landlord or utility provider can report delinquencies, which can then appear on your credit report. If these bills remain unpaid, they may be handed over to a collection agency, leading to significant damage to your FICO score—comparable to late payments on loans or credit cards.
When you move, prospective landlords often request a copy of your FICO score and credit report. They may also contact your current landlord to verify your payment history. Even with a high FICO score, a potential landlord might choose another applicant if your current landlord reports late or incomplete rent payments. Maintaining a positive relationship with your current landlord by paying on time can be crucial for future rental opportunities.
